Houston Texans Legend has Lovely Reaction to New Star’s Decision on Wearing His Number
Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Texans are looking to build on their impressive 2023 season by making massive additions to their roster. One of the crown jewels in their 2024 offseason so far is the acquisition of Daniele Jones from the Minnesota Vikings.

However, die-hard Texans fans immediately knew that there would be an interesting dilemma happening once Hunter was in the building. He wore 99 with the Vikings, which was what Texans legend JJ Watt wore during his ten years with the organization.

Many wouldn’t have been surprised if the talented defensive end wanted to stick with his number of choice, but his decision pleased both Watt and the fans.

JJ Watt praises Danielle Hunter for respecting his Houston Texans legacy and choosing another number

The Spun’s Hunter Hodies wrote about what Watt’s opinion on Hunter’s gesture towards his legendary career by choosing to wear another number.

It’s clear to see that he loved the gesture:

J.J. Watt loves that Danielle Hunter decided not to wear his number.

Hunter is set to wear No. 55 since No. 99 was Watt’s number and Watt liked the sound of that on Thursday.

“A guy I would have loved to play alongside. Nothing but respect,” Watt tweeted.

Having someone like JJ Swatt say that he would like to play with you is probably one of the highest praises a defensive end can get. He’s one of the first players fans think of when it comes to domineering defensive ends, and Hunter just won extra brownie points with the Houston Texans fandom.

Will Danielle Hunter be able to live up to JJ Watt’s legacy?

It’s going to be tough for Hunter to try to match (let alone outdo) Watt’s contributions to Texans lore.

In his ten years in Houston, Watt made 531 tackles—with 449 being solo efforts—to go with 101 sacks, 16 fumble recoveries for one touchdown, 25 forced fumbles, 61 pass deflections, and two interceptions for 99 yards and two pick-sixes.

The 29-year-old LSU alum has also enjoyed a remarkable career. He has 462 tackles to his name with 316 done on his own. He has 87.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries for 60 yards and two TDs. He’s also made eight pass deflections.

The only way Hunter could probably overtake Watt’s legacy in the Houston Texans is to help the team win the Super Bow in his first year there.
