Jermall Charlo Says He Will Box Canelo In September As Alvarez Ducks Benavidez Again

Jermall Charlo claims he will box Canelo Alvarez next.

Alvarez defends his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title on May 4 against Jaime Munguia. Alvarez’s last fight was a unanimous decision win over Jermall’s brother, Jermell Charlo. Jermell moved up two weight classes from 154. However, the weight difference was noticeable, with Charlo’s punches failing to do any damage. Canelo was able to walk down Charlo, who was simply interested in surviving.

Before facing Jermell, Jermall was linked with the Canelo fight. However, he was not ready to take the bout after having been out of the ring for over two years. Jermall struggled with mental health issues. He returned to beat Jose Benavidez Jr. last year via a unanimous decision. However, Benavidez is a 154-pounder, as they fought over a 160 catchweight. Jermall said they would box in September, but Canelo’s team has stayed silent.

Charlo On Canelo

“Imma fight Canelo… imma get my brother revenge in September. I’m going to get the revenge. I’m not enjoying this…no more. The money ain’t the issue. I got a birthday coming in a couple of days. I did enough. [And] I made history. Dealing with all kinds of cases of [being] bipolar, being by yourself, thinking that you shutting the world out is gonna help you.

“But you need to be able to speak to someone and help you get past whatever you’re going through. It just feels like everybody is against you. I don’t care if you’re in the Uber, a cab, wherever, everybody is just against you. [And] I couldn’t tell that some people weren’t against me. It was just that at the moment it’s the way you’re feeling and I turned my back against pretty much the world. [And] I just had to start getting help with it and it made me a lot better,” Charlo revealed

Plant On Charlo

Caleb Plant is ready to step in if that fight does not go ahead. The former IBF Super Middleweight Champion has been chasing Charlo for some time. Their bad blood began when Plant slapped Charlo after the Errol Spence Jr. vs Terence Crawford weigh-in. Security intervened, separating the pair as things got out of hand. Plant later explained that Charlo had disrespected him in front of his wife, including pulling his beard.

While he warned Charlo, the boxer apparently failed to listen to Plant’s grievances. Plant is coming off a loss to David Benavidez. A win would have made him the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion, making him mandatory for Canelo. But since he missed out, he is now focused on Charlo. Plant could box Charlo for the WBC Middleweight Title if he can make 160. Alternatively, Charlo could move up to 168 to box Plant. Either way, Caleb was targeting that fight.

“This is the fight I want, can’t make it anymore clear. Let’s fight or leave me be and don’t mention my name anymore. This is the fight the boxing world wants and I’m in the business of making big fights,” Plant stated
